Rolex Paul Newman Daytona Reference 6239 with Box, Letter of Provenance and Service Receipt

This is a rare Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6239 with “Mark 1” black dial. It is from the earliest run of “Paul Newman” or “Exotic” dial Cosmograph Daytonas.

The Mark 1 Paul Newman Daytonas feature a larger “T SWISS T” below 6:00, the 300 Units Per Hour bezel, and feature a thin seconds register hand plus flared minute and hour register hands.

The is very nice and attractive example. The rare 300 bezel appears unpolished while the case appears to be lightly polished. The serial number is 1.59 million dating to circa 1967.

The watch comes with box, a letter of provenance, and service papers. It previously came from the original owner who purchased the watch new in Mexico. The Jubilee bracelet is an “Hecho en Mexico” bracelet. This is a rare opportunity to own a Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona with black dial.

The watch dates to circa 1968 and features a 1.76M serial number. The dial is in spectacular condition. The case has been lightly polished, but is quite strong.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Reference E 853

Along with the Atmos clocks, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s advancements in alarm timepieces throughout the 20th century are certainly one of the most iconic genres from the Le Sentier manufacturer. This Memovox is the reference E 853 from the late 1950s. The reference’s “E” stands for Etanche, which indicates the case is a water-resistant model.

The watch is powered by the calibre 815. The movement is a bumper-automatic, which means it does not rotate a full 360 degrees. Instead, the oscillating weight will bounce back and forth between two spring sides within the movement. This example was produced in the late 1950s.

It features a very attractive and warm toned dial with an uncommon dial layout of 3, 6, 9, and 12 numerals. It also features the very attractive dauphine hour markers seen on many JLC dials from the 1950s. The case has been polished in the past. It is 37mm in diameter. The case back is later with a serial for the reference E 855 from the 1960s which was replaced during a service. It features the correct unsigned crowns. Among the vintage automatic Memovox references, the E 853, E 855, E 875 are some of my personal favorites. They are some of the most classic Jaeger-LeCoultre models and wear very nice on the wrist.

The watch does not come with box and papers. We do not know the service history, but it is running well.

Introduced in 1960 an icon was born in the Rolex Explorer reference 1016. The 1016 was produced until circa 1989. The ref. 1016 marked the first Explorer with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" printed on the dial. It is one of the most desired timepieces and for great reason. The 1016 is one of the purest expressions of watch design and for this reason that I am probably asked for vintage Explorer reference 1016s more than any other watch.
