Esquire: Drake's "Take Care" Rolex GMT-Master II Watch Just Sold for £500k. Here's Why

Esquire recently wrote the article ‘Drake's "Take Care" Rolex GMT-Master II Watch Just Sold for £500k. Here's Why’

The story the watch media went nuts for last week came from Wind Vintage, the Florida dealer run by friend-of-Esquire Eric Wind. It listed Drake’s yellow-gold Rolex GMT-Master II from the cover of his 2011 album Take Care and the video for “Marvin’s Room”, at an eye-watering $500,000 [around £400,000].

On its own, this factory gem-set reference is already a serious thing, with comparable examples trading closer to $100,000 and made in very limited numbers. This one is unpolished, offered as a full set, and comes from the original owner in Drake’s circle, alongside OVO [October’s Very Own, his label and brand] memorabilia, with the owl logo engraved on the caseback and additional items from the Take Care era.

As the great man once put it: “This a Rollie, not a stopwatch”.

On Friday, the watch sold for its full list price of $500k. Speaking to WatchPro about the sale, Eric Wind said: “It is an interesting time in the watch field and one that I felt was coming for a long time: watches have become more of a passion investment category with new records continually being broken for outstanding vintage and independent watches while at the same time a significant portion of the Swiss watch industry seems to generally be struggling in selling watches.
