Rolex Exclamation Gilt Dial Explorer Ref 1016 Unpolished
The Rolex Explorer reference 1016 is an icon of simplicity and function. The Explorer reference 1016 was produced from 1960 until circa 1989 and it was the first Explorer with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. The 1016 is one of the purest expressions of watch design and I am asked for great vintage Explorer reference 1016 examples more than any other watch.
This example features a gilt dial the rare “Exclamation” dial with dot below 6:00 indicating a reduce amount of radiation in the radium / tritium mixture of luminous material (a.k.a. “lume”). It features a 745,XXX serial dating it to circa 1962. The gilt, glossy dial is extremely attractive and glossy / shiny. The case appears to be unpolished. It is paired on a Rolex 7206 Rivet bracelet dating to 1962 with correct 58 end links. The watch measures 36mm in diameter (43mm lug-to-lug). The watch features a later flat service crystal. When we tried to use a domed crystal, the bezel was a touch too big to accommodate.

The watch does not come with box and papers. We do not know the service history, but it is running well.
