Rolex Explorer I Reference 1016 Unpolished on Oval Link Bracelet
The Rolex Explorer reference 1016 is one of the purest expressions of watch design, and it is for this reason that I am probably asked for vintage Explorer reference 1016s more than any other watch.
This is a very special Explorer reference 1016. The case back features an incredible Spanish engraving “Trabajador Distinguido 1975” (Distinguished Worker). It was given to a Mexican field worker by his boss who owned a farm after being a loyal employee for a number of years. The font is hand engraved and particularly attractive.
This example dates to circa late 1972 with a 3.00M serial. It features a tritium matte dial. The case appears to be unpolished. It measures 36mm in diameter (43mm lug-to-lug). It is paired on Rolex Oval link bracelet made by Joske's in Mexico.
We do not know the service history, but it is running well. It does not come with a box or papers. It recently passed a 5 bar water resistance test.
