Rolex Gilt Dial Explorer Reference 1016 Unpolished

Few watches get more inquiries to purchase than when I put up a great, unpolished Rolex sports watch with a gilt glossy dial. They just get another level of attention from collectors and there is clearly insatiable demand for the few survivors of this era that are in great condition, such as this Explorer. The Rolex Explorer reference 1016 is an icon of simplicity and function. The Explorer reference 1016 was produced from 1960 until circa 1989 and it was the first Explorer with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" printed on the dial. The 1016 is one of the purest expressions of watch design and I am asked for great vintage Explorer reference 1016 examples more than any other watch.

This example is the best of both worlds: a crisp case that absolutely appears to be unpolished with an essentially perfect and flawless gilt, glossy dial. You just can’t find them like this! The hands are gilt / golden and also add a sophistication and beauty that compliments the gilt, gold printing and the color of the original tritium. It features an 1.05M serial dating it to circa 1964. The case and bezel are crisp and we believe they are unpolished. It measures 36mm in diameter (43mm lug-to-lug). The lume is very attractive. It is paired on a Swiss-Made Jubilee bracelet dating to 1965 with 55 end links, giving it a slightly more dressy look than on an Oyster rivet bracelet from the period. The case back has the name of the original owner on it and reflects a very American and collegiate style of font, adding further charm and charisma to the watch.

The watch does not come with box and papers. We do not know the service history, but it is running well. The watch has been in an important private collection for years and I am beyond excited to be offering it for sale. I just have no idea when I will get another example that is this nice! The Special Air Service of the United Kingdom has the motto: “Who Dares Wins.” In the case of a watch like this, it could be changed to: “Who Wires Wins.”
