Universal Genève Uni-Compax "Big Eye” Reference 884100/01

Universal Genève is widely recognized for its impact on complicated wristwatches during the 20th century. And although I am most definitely passionate about finding beautiful time only examples such as steel Polerouters, SAS issued examples or the even outliers with decorative dial portraits the Compax models are certainly the pieces many aspire to own.

The Compax line is extremely diverse and could quite easily be a focused subsection for collectors to find years of enjoyment collecting and studying the different models and eras. I have had the pleasure of finding incredible complicated Universal Genève models over the past four years as a dealer, and countless more during both my time as a collector and Vice President, Senior Specialist at Christie’s.

The UG Uni-Compax “Big Eye” Reference 884100/01 is synonymous with the asymmetrical subdial configurations in chronographs. Produced for a short two year span from 1963-1965 it is one of the highlight models of the brands’ 1960s catalog.

The hands’ luminous material is completely intact, with light patina which has developed mainly on the broader hour hand. The watch is powered by a Universal Genève calibre 125. The case is unpolished with dimensions of 36.5mm wide. It comes on the original Gay Frères bracelet which has a stiff feel on the wrist.
