Longines 1952 Winter Army Championships Reference 5356 Unpolished w/ Extract & Box
This Longines reference 5356 is an incredibly special timepiece not only because of the outstanding condition of the watch, but also the story behind it. The watch is one of 2 reference 5356s that were awarded in The 1952 Winter Army Championship in Andermatt. The case is engraved with “Internationaler Militar-Skipatrouillenlauf 1952 Andermatt (Schweiz) 1. Rang” - “International Military Ski Patrol Run. 1st Place.” The watch was left unworn for many years - and the sibling model was the original owner/reciepients watch he wore frequently. The dial on the 2nd example shows signs of humidity and wear to the case and was likely worn while skiing over the years.
Researching the provenance engraved onto the timepieces found the story of Melker Risberg (also spelled Melcher). Born February 16, 1930, Risberg was a celebrated Swedish cross country skier who competed throughout Europe. He was recognized in several articles for his 2nd place in the International Singles Ski Race during the 1952 Die grossartigen Winter-Armeemeisterschaften in Andermatt (The great winter army championships in Andermatt). He would cover the 18-kilometer distance in a ranked time of 1:19:19 just behind his Swedish teammate Adolf Wiklund by merely 32 seconds. For the 1st place timepiece - research highlights it was earned alongside his Swedish teammates in the 28km patrol run. Among Sweeden Team I’s participants were Sundberg, Adolf Wiklund, [Melker] Risberg, and Sdt. Jonsson.
Longines would be recognized within the March 3rd issue of Der Bund’s sports section highlighting the satisfaction with Olympic organizers of the timekeeping instruments. Several other sporting events, including the Winter Army Championships in Andermatt, were mentioned alongside the prestigious competition.
The case measures 35mm in diameter. It is unpolished and in phenomenal condition. The dial is pristine. The reference 5356 is powered by the calibre 12.68Z, a manual wind movement with sub-seconds. The 12 ligne movement operates at 18,000 VPH and is comprised of 17 jewels. The watch is paired on a contemporary beads or rice bracelet made by Private Eyes.

Collectors of oversized vintage time-only and chronograph models, such as vintage Longines, Breitling or Universal Genève collectors, often have not had the chance to see one of these rare models in person, but when they do, it is not unusual to hear an audible gasp or at least eyes widening when they try it on their wrist.

TUDOR HODINKEE Black Bay 58 w/ Box Unpolished
The TUDOR Black Bay 58 is one of the coolest modern watches. This particular example is one of only 100 examples produced for HODINKEE’s Friends & Family. I love the model and have it within my personal collection! It is particularly interesting to vintage watches enthusiasts, as the design is very much inspired by the iconic Rolex “Big Crown” Submariner references 6538, 6200, 5510, and the TUDOR Submariner reference 7924. The dials have a similar texture to the matte dials with gold accents inspired by gilt dials. For those who love HODINKEE and appreciate the greatness of the TUDOR Black Bay 58, this is an incredible timepiece to wear in any setting.
I will never forget seeing my first TUDOR Black Bay 58 on the wrist of Jason Fried in Chicago many years ago and I was floored by the watch. I will never forget seeing the special HODINKEE version on the wrist of Brandon Frazin around 2019 and I was also floored by how awesome the watch was. I was honored to receive one shortly thereafter as a gift from Ben Clymer and it is a watch that really is special to me, particularly since I poured so many hours into writing for the site in its formative years and learned so much in the process. I am excited to be able to offer one for sale now and think whoever gets it will be extremely happy to own it. Phillips recently sold one for around $22,000 through its Perpetual program.
The watch has some wear, but is unpolished. It comes from the original owner who is a significant and, more importantly, cool individual within the HODINKEE universe. I absolutely love my HODINKEE Black Bay 58 and believe that the dual-signed examples, like this one, are very special.
Charlie Dunne says that the Black Bay 58 is his favorite modern watch. Owning a cool double-signed example from HODINKEE is an epic option for daily wear.
